Historic Paddle Art - J Peachey Canoe

Here's an image by James Peachey (active 1773-1797) documenting a stylized canoe with inhabitats. Paddles look to be painted red  fitting the theme of earlier images...

It appears that the paddle color matches the standing man's skin trousers/leggings. I believe that many older red paints were rather unstable. The paddles might not have been originally red.

Oops... I was a bit backwards on my comment. Many colors were unstable and in this case, it may have been the red that wasn't (there is a bright red sash). But, the color mixed with the red to make a tan/brown might have faded.
