Maliseet Auction Paddle with Spears

From this LiveAuctioneers.com posting, what appears to be a Maliseet style chip carved paddle with some fishing spears

NATIVE PADDLE AND (2) SPEARS
Paddle is carved with geometric patterns; spears are forged metal tips on wooden shafts, (1) shaft is broken, paddle L-61"

Wish there was a better shot of the paddle, but it appears to have some carved drip rings right at the base of the grip along with some decorative incisings.

  2. Hi Sorin. I received your email and tried to respond but it was returned twice as "undeliverable with critical errors" by my email program. So instead, I'm responding here.

Congratulations on purchasing what looks like a beautiful paddle. Now that I look at it again, the shape does look very similar to this circa 1850 Passamaquoddy paddle in the collection of the National Museum of the American Indian.

Not sure about its value as I am not an auction expert, but 2 other woodlands paddles that were estimated to be around $700 but were sold at auction for well over their price...the 1st one for $1600 and the 2nd one for $2500 (will have a post on the website soon). To be fair, these paddles had a documented history as museum exhibits that increased their value, but it is fair to say there may be a special market for collectors.

As far as new ones go, the best paddle maker of this style in my opinion is Rick Nash who specializes in these carved decorated paddles. Not sure about Rick's prices, but I will send an email to him and hopefully he'll respond.

In the meantime, I would very much appreciate any more photos you can send!

    Best Regards to you,
    Murat
